the wonders of speaking curator

Ever wondered about what language some of those art gallery wall texts were written in?

Some are real gems in obfuscation; some tell you how to think and react; some tell you more about the curator then about the work.

How much is too much?

The best curatorial text will give you the basics and then leave you to engage with the work. It is a joy to read them.

Has anyone researched the art gallery labels and wall text and produced any evidence what actually assists or hinders the audience to enjoy and engage with the curated artworks?

  1. Art speak frightens viewers. Text panels should be no more than 150 words. Short n too the point. Curators try to be pseudo academics when their role is to humanize art.
