art criticism

looking for art criticism, reviews, opinions

A few comments about so called reviews in arts and architectural magazines.

While I understand the role for industry mags – promotions (more self-promotion) – the general public in Australia are starved of well written critical writing about our urban spaces/parks/ architecture etc.

The visual arts are the same. There’s very little Australian writing that actually expresses a strong opinion one way or the other. People want to hear what the professional experts think.

For instance I enjoy – but not always agree with some of the arts and architectural writers in The Guardian. When you finish their pieces you know what they think of the work (likes and dislikes) and why.

It is shame in Australia that so many in architectural professions and the arts do not value the role and benefits of the honest and critical cultural/arts/architectural writers.
