Contour 556 is a national public sculpture biennial, for Australia’s capital.
Contour 556 aims to:
Promote the ACT and region’s artists in a national event to a national audience; Further the development of the ACT region as a national cultural hub; Complement the festival and event program in Australia’s Capital region; Engage with schools and the community through offering web-based education resources.
Contour 556 runs from 5 -28 October 2018.
It coincides with the last week of Floriade, Canberra’s festival of spring. Works will engage with the physical, political and cultural landscape of Canberra.
2018 will be the second iteration of contour 556. In 2016, the event saw 48 artists present works in cultural institutions, the lake shore, commercial foyers and the Kingston Arts precinct.
In 2018 we will present works by 60 artists, working in sculpture, installation, light, soundscapes, poetry, spoken word, and digital space.
Works and performances occupy the land, the lake, adjacent cultural institutions and extend to 2 new sculpture parks in Canberra, at Canberra Airport and Denman Prospect. Performers will utilise the National Library foyer, the Carillon in Lake Burley Griffin and the NGA sculpture garden.
All donations through the Australian Cultural Fund will go towards artist participation.
All artists will be paid a fee consistent with NAVA recommendations. Your donation of $1,000 will assist in a regional artist participating, covering artist fee and some production costs; Your donation of $2,500 will allow an interstate or international artist to participate, covering artist fee, freight to and from the event, and travel for the artist.
We are seeking funds to cover the participation of 10-15 artists through the funding call. We will also be seeking sponsorship and submitting grant applications to round out the event to include 60 artists and performers.
All donations above $2.00 are tax deductible through the ACF and, thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia’s MATCH Lab program, every dollar you preference to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar, provided we reach our campaign target of $10,000!
